Thanks to the hard work and commitment of its staff, Burke Hospice and Palliative Care is now one of the most highly qualified organizations of its kind to serve military veterans in the state. In collaboration with We Honor Veterans — a partnership with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization — BHPC has achieved its highest accomplishment with the program and is considered a “level four partner.”

Proudly Serving Those Who ServedOne in four dying Americans is a Veteran. Veterans who experienced combat service or some other type of trauma are very likely to have these experiences from their past resurface at the end of life. The delayed stress coupled with their end of life issues presents special challenges for the veteran, his or her family and the caregivers. |
We Honor Veterans National PartnershipRecognizing the unique needs of the Veterans we serve, Burke Hospice & Palliative Care has partnered with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) to provide the best care possible for this special group. Burke Hospice & Palliative Care is utilizing NHPCO’s national resources and training programs to develop a plan of care to meet our Veterans and their families needs.
Making "We Honor Veterans" A Burke Hospice & Palliative Care ProgramSpecial training is given to all employees in order to help them better understand the issues Veterans and their families are facing at the end of life. This training equips our staff to anticipate needs faster and to develop a more comprehensive plan of care for each Veteran. |
Special recognition is given to each Veteran when he or she is admitted into the hospice program. Residential patients are pinned with a special flag pin and given a refrigerator magnet by their care team to acknowledge their service. Hospice patients that are brought into our Inpatient facility are pinned by staff and given a wreath that celebrates their service to our country. Burke Hospice & Palliative Care is also beginning to offer to any Veteran that requests a volunteer a Veteran volunteer. In many cases, veterans will only open up and discuss certain issues with other Veterans who have shared similar experiences. |
