We Honor Veterans

Proudly Serving Those Who Served

One in four dying Americans is a veteran. Veterans who experienced combat service or other types of trauma are likely to have these past experiences resurface at the end of their life. The delayed stress coupled with their end of life issues present special challenges for the veteran, his or her family and the caregivers.

Making "We Honor Veterans" a Burke Hospice & Palliative Care Program

Special training is given to all employees in order to help them better understand the issues Veterans and their families are facing at the end of life. This training equips our staff to anticipate needs faster and to develop a more comprehensive plan of care for each Veteran.

Burke Hospice & Palliative Care also offers veterans the option of requesting a volunteer who is also a veteran. In many cases, veterans will only open up and discuss certain issues with other Veterans who have shared similar experiences. These relationships often prove therapeutic to both veterans who can discuss like experiences, concerns, and desires.

Special recognition is given to each Veteran when he or she is admitted into the hospice program. Residential patients are pinned with a special flag pin and given a refrigerator magnet by their care team to acknowledge their service. House patients that are brought into our Inpatient facility are pinned by staff and given a wreath that celebrates their service to our country.
